Sergeant Smack chronicles the story of North Carolina’s Leslie “Ike” Atkinson, an adventurer, gambler and one of U.S. history’s most original gangsters. Under
the cover of the Vietnam War and through the use of the U.S. military infrastructure, Atkinson masterminded an enterprising group of family members and former African American GIs that the DEA
identified as one of history’s ten top drug trafficking rings. Ike’s organization moved heroin from Thailand to North Carolina and beyond.
According to law enforcement sources, 1,000 pounds is a conservative estimate of the amount of heroin the ring transported annually from Bangkok, Thailand, through U.S. military bases, into the U.S. during its period of operation from 1968 to 1975. That amount translates to about $400 million worth of illegal drug sales during that period.

On July 22, 1991, serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested. As the officers searched his apartment in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, they discovered dismembered body
parts in the refrigerator. Further investigation led them to photographs of other victims which Dahmer dismembered. Upon confessing to officers, Dahmer admitted to acts of necrophilia and
cannibalism. For the first time in print, Dahmer’s Confession presents the Milwaukee cannibal’s complete confession, raw and uncensored.
Jeffrey Dahmer’s inclusion into the Serial Killer Culture is illustrated in the book by including artworks based on Dahmer and writings by those affected by Dahmer’s case and crimes.

In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the twentieth century’s most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls."
At age fourteen Dianne Lake—with little more than a note in her pocket from her hippie parents granting her permission to leave them—became one of "Charlie’s girls," a devoted acolyte of cult leader Charles Manson. Over the course of two years, the impressionable teenager endured manipulation, psychological control, and physical abuse as the harsh realities and looming darkness of Charles Manson’s true nature revealed itself. From Spahn ranch and the group acid trips, to the Beatles’ White Album and Manson’s dangerous messiah-complex, Dianne tells the riveting story of the group’s descent into madness as she lived it.

In this epic biography of Edward Lansdale (1908-1987), the man said to be the fictional model for Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, bestselling historian Max Boot demonstrates how Lansdale pioneered a “hearts and mind” diplomacy, first in the Philippines, then in Vietnam. It was a visionary policy that, as Boot reveals, was ultimately crushed by America’s giant military bureaucracy, steered by elitist generals and blue-blood diplomats who favored troop build-ups and napalm bombs over winning the trust of the people. Through dozens of interviews and access to never-before-seen documents – including long-hidden love letters – Boot recasts this cautionary American story, tracing the bold rise and the crashing fall of the roguish “T.E. Lawrence of Asia”—from the battle of Dien Bien Phu to the humiliating American evacuation in 1975. Bringing a tragic complexity to this so-called “Ugly American,” Boot rescues Lansdale from historical ignominy and suggests that Vietnam could have been different had we only listened. With reverberations that continue to resonate in Iraq and Afghanistan, The Road Not Taken is a biography of profound historical consequence.
Of the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism, communism, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history. Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.
I attend criminal court trials in San Diego and write stories about sensational and gripping cases. I have a deep passion for true crime, criminal law, and all aspects of the criminal justice system. My stories will take you into the courtroom for a front row seat in high-profile murder trials, rape cases, and crimes of passion. You will hear captivating and emotional testimony from the accused, from victims, medical experts, and other crucial witnesses, and be enthralled by the attorneys’ fiery arguments. These true stories have the power to move people, while highlighting societal issues which need to be addressed. I have personally witnessed in courtrooms the human devastation that is present in each trial, and I believe there is a lesson to be learned in every single case. Select stories have been published in San Diego Lawyer Magazine.
Leslie’s family traveled to the People’s Temple in Redwood Valley, CA. when Leslie was just twelve years old. The final move happened in 1970. Early indoctrination of the Temple’s ideology proved to make her viable to the church and became dedicated to that. However, in later years, she would doubt, discover and decide that life in Peoples Temple was not the life she wanted. Witnessing brutality, manipulation and control she began to separate herself. Married, 19 and a mom, Jim Jones and her husband planned the ultimate plan. Her son Jakari, then not quite two years old was the pawn for Leslie to re-dedicate her to the so-called cause of “socialism.”
